We had over ten children from our Homeschool support group attend the Introduction to Archery class last Monday night. I was the only Mom there, (and only because I was the trip coordinator)-so it was great to have the Dads come and meet each other, and support their childrens efforts to learn a new skill. It was amazing to watch as every student improved over the length of the class-they each had lots of opportunity to shoot and by the end of the night all were hitting very close to center. For a finale, the Teacher sweetened the pot by taping assorted dollar amonts (real cash!) to the board-all eyes got big when he explained "what you hit-you get". Josiah hit a $5 bill and he seems to be a natural marksman, like his Grandpa Del who bowhunts elk. I told him to not shoot anymore and let the other children have more tries but John overruled because their teacher had said you didn't have to quit, and could keep shooting after winning once. It was so interesting to see how the Dads handled everything, and how different we are! I was just SO concerned about the other children's feelings but John (rightly) saw it as a life lesson in competition and taking pride in your talents/skills. When Josiah won another bill, (and then another!) I was in such turmoil, and John saw my anguish and laughed..."honey, if he was pitching a no-hitter game, would you pull him out to let the other pitchers have a turn?!" and though I truly got what he was saying with that analogy, the truth is YES! sadly, I would...just to make it fair and make sure no one got their feelings hurt.
This may be why you don't see many Moms as the head coach in Major League baseball...

Way to go Josiah! Tyler, Kyle and Kalynda all took archery through 4H
shooting sports. It was great. Tyler does bow hunt and loves it.
Their instructors have trained olympians!
And Brenda, I had to laugh - I could just picture you and John. Good thing you guys balance each other so well. :)
Love, Kippi
