Part of his penmanship practice, but he addressed it to me and silently hung it on the fridge last Summer. I've recently cleaned the fridge off, and moved this paper to the big box of sentimental swill I keep under our bed. When I am finally dead, my sons (or John's second, less worthy wife) will have to muck out a mountain load of drawings, Mothers Day cards and tempera paint handprint pictures that I saved. Before I go and add this to the collection of proof-that-I-once-mattered-to-someone, I share it with all of you. It was a very big deal to me when he gave it, (and still is), because I was taken by such suprise... One of my boys saw the words "hard work" and thought of his Mom? Well, if you know my side of the family you know how that that would make my Dad (and his Dad) very proud...a strong work ethic runs deep through my family (and they'd be the first to admit that it can get too deep! Yet after admitting to rampant workaholism being a self-inflicted disease? they'd just grin, and get back to that 14 hour work day)
So, with such a tall yardstick, I don't tend to think of myself as a hard worker, and that made the unexpected compliment all the more precious.
Besides all of that, the big deal is this: Here in 2008, how many Moms get a note of appreciation from their 13 year old sons?!
I'm telling you, I am a very blessed woman.
(and yes i know it's kind of bragging. shut up, its my blawg.) it says:
"It is better to get your hands dirty-and eat, than to be too proud to work and starve. Hard work means prosperity. Only a fool idles away his time." Proverbs 12:9-11
dear Mom, When I saw this, I thought of you. Mom, I want to thank you for taking care of me. Love, Josiah

I agree with Josiah! You work HARD! When we are at your house, you are rarely still. Sheesh, I can't even get a second cup of water without having to go look for my cup already cleared into the sink! I have to say, you do lead by example, because I'm noticing that Josiah is quick to offer help with work. You are raising some great kids because you are a great mom! (John's a good dad too, I suppose!) =)
