We are going through the book "Christian Kids Explore...Earth and Space" by Stephanie Redmond for our Science curriculum this year, and we are really enjoying it. In our study of volcanoes we found this great "how to" video, showing visual instructions for making a re-usable volcano model!

Grandpa found a board and helped Josiah cut a hole out of the bottom, then we went to work. Well, not "we" because after Mom sprayed the foam, it was ALL Josiah's project:
The artist, at work. Another great website on volcanoes is here-http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/pompeii/interactive/interactive.html
You can build web models and see how the various elements combine to make different kinds of explosions. The boys played on this site for an hour!
He did a great job, didn't he? He was very careful to get lots of different colors in there! When he was finished, I thought he should give it a name. (Mt. Hottlava? Mt. St. Bigblow?) But Josiah rolled his eyes, as 13 year olds are apt to do at mothers who take the little school project too far...
Our ingredients for such an explosion? Diet Coke and Mint Mentos. We would love an excuse for another eruption so feel free to request a personal demonstration on your next visit to la casa!
