If you are familiar with that old Don Williams country song (and--sorry to out you here on the Internet, Brian--but I am certain you and I are the only people under the age of 62 who still enjoy listening to Don W.) then you know that song has nothing to do with a ten year old boy raking autumn leaves. Still. It's catchy title. And now I'll have the tune in my head all day...
but Caleb asked if he could rake the leaves in a pile, to jump into. I warned him of landing in slugs but despite the mucus threat his enthusiasm was high. He'd read about this in books, and wanted to experience it himself! So he borrowed my best gardening tools, promising to take care of them. I threatened him good too, because it takes a lot of dog chewing to get a yellow bucket that textured. The rake is like a few of my cousins, in that it's missing several teeth and don't work so good. and the wheelbarrow is so full of rust, Caleb will probably need a tetanus shot by Tuesday.
I'm saying you can go ahead and get me a Home Dept giftcard for Christmas there, Santy Claus.

He jumped twice and then we discussed how book authors ocassionally embellish to make ordinary life interesting.

Caleb is a clever boy, and always looking for money making ventures. Leafpiles had been made, and though jumping wasn't as fun as expected? Soon I heard...

I remember being so excited to rake leaves into a big pile and jump in. It was about as fun as that stinkin' slip and slide on HARD GROUND! Good for Caleb though, he is a clever boy!
I seem to remember jumping in there was pretty until one day I saw those earwigs all over the place. They freak me out still.
I'm gonna throw in my Don Williams greatest hits CD right now.
